Hello everyone in Montréal/Tiohtià:ke.
My name is Yoeh Noda, and I’m a performance artist from Japan. I’ve been living in Montréal/Tiohtià:ke since the summer of 2025.
Now, after almost a year here, I finally feel ready to present my performance in this city.

Performance: 1(忘)LDK ver. Yoeh Noda

For this event, I will perform a work that I originally created in 2023.
This performance is my version of 1(忘)LDK, an ongoing performance project initiated by Kyle Yamada and the artist duo JeunesseWhite (Katsura Ako and Yoeh Noda). Artists create their own solo performance based on a shared instruction text. So far, fifteen artists have created their own versions of 1(忘)LDK, each interpreting the instructions in a unique way.

My version, 1(忘)LDK ver. Yoeh Noda, incorporates Japanese—my native language—as well as Taiwanese Mandarin and Taiwanese, languages that are deeply connected to my identity. Since its premiere, it has been performed at seven venues across four cities: Kyoto, Tokyo, Kobe, and Taipei.

For this presentation, I will adapt the work into a Montréal version. French, a language I’m still learning, has become part of the performance. It is both a challenge and a work that is still evolving.

Join 1(忘)LDK

1(忘)LDK has two pillars; the idea of being alone, and the three-by-three-metre performance space.

The project takes inspiration from Hōjōki (tales of the square foot hut), written by the 12th-century Japanese monk Kamo no Chōmei. In the later years of his life, Chōmei chose to live alone in a small portable hut, roughly the same size as the three-by-three-metre space used in this project.

Inspired by his writing, 1(忘)LDK imagines a performance that can be created alone, performed alone, and carried by a single person, as a way of reflecting on isolation and solitude in the contemporary world.

I’m inviting people in Montréal to create their own version of 1(忘)LDK.

After this performance, I plan to present the work once again in August. I would love to perform alongside someone presenting their own version of 1(忘)LDK. If this idea speaks to you, I’d be delighted to explore it together.

On July 10, I’ll share my current version of 1(忘)LDK and talk more about the ideas behind both the work and the larger project. I’d also love to hear your thoughts, questions, and impressions. Everyone is warmly welcome.

And if you’re interested in creating your own version of 1(忘)LDK, please come and talk to me. I’d be happy to discuss presenting our respective versions together in August.
